Jump Start Music Program

First implemented in 2009, our district's Jump Start Music Program has been designed to ensure that each 5th grader student has experience with instrumental ensembles prior to Middle School class selection.

Phases of the Jump Start Music Program

Instrument Petting Zoo:

Taking place during school, the during this assembly representatives from McCourt's Music Group and members of the Royal Oak Music Department staff introduce the 5th grade students to the various musical instruments offered in our beginning band and orchestra classes. After learning about each instrument, students will then have an opportunity to play each of them. These instruments include: violin, viola, cello, flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone, glockenspiel, and snare drum.

Instrument Fittings:

Held after school at Royal Oak High School, this event is necessary for any student interested in or planning to participate in the Beginning Band and Orchestra classes in 6th grade. During the event, students will work with a Royal Oak Music Department staff member to explore all the available Beginning Band and Orchestra instruments. The instrument fitting process allows each student to further explore their instrument choices and helps to make sure each student is matched to the instrument they are most interested in and/or best suited to play.
