Royal Oak High School senior Devon Wills was awarded a full-ride scholarship in a surprise ceremony. Devon received life-changing news on May 28, that he had been awarded the Robert A. Schuele Scholarship, a full-ride, four-year scholarship recognizing exceptional commitment and service.
According to their website, this scholarship has been awarded to students who have graduated from Michigan colleges for over fifteen years, with several hundred students applying. According to the Oakland County Times, the scholarship fund is to grant a scholarship award in an amount that will secure the attendance of a student at a major college or university in Michigan. The article states that the trustess search for applicants who have outstanding character, demonstrate commitment to academic studies, experience significant financial need and who will take advantage of the mentoring and networking resources the Trustees intend to offer to maximize the recipient's educational experience. Scholarship funds support college tuition, fees, room and board, books and materials.
Some of the criteria is to have a 2.3 G.P.A. at school and to be a high school senior in the Wayne, Oakland, and/or Macomb County, or a member in good standing with Metro Detroit Youth Clubs.
Devon’s connection to the Metro Detroit Youth Club (MDYC) runs deep. He began as a “club kid,” participating in youth programs, and later returned to volunteer and mentor younger students, demonstrating a strong commitment to service and leadership. Out of nine finalists, Devon was selected for this prestigious honor.
The surprise announcement took place at Royal Oak High School, with Principal Don Loomis, Superintendent Mary Beth Fitzpatrick, and members of the Robert A. Schuele Scholarship Committee on hand to celebrate.
Devon plans to attend Michigan State University in the fall and pursue a career in physical therapy.
“This scholarship means everything,” said Devon. “It allows me to go straight to MSU in the fall and continue pursuing my dream of becoming a physical therapist. I can now focus entirely on my studies without having to take on a part-time job.”
The Robert A. Scheule Scholarship is one of MDYC’s most prestigious honors, designed to recognize students who show resilience, leadership, and a dedication to helping others - qualities Devon embodies.
“Devon’s story is a powerful example of what happens when students are supported, empowered, and given opportunities to lead,” said Superintendent Mary Beth Fitzpatrick. “We are incredibly proud of him and can’t wait to see all he will accomplish.”
This achievement aligns with Royal Oak Schools mission to create an inclusive, student-first environment and the district’s vision to foster a community of excellence. Devon’s journey stands as a testament to the lasting impact of mentorship, community, and hard work.
Congratulations, Devon! Your future is bright—and green and white!
