What is Schools of Choice?

Royal Oak School District is a Section 105 which permits us to enroll students, grades K-8, who reside in other local school districts within the Oakland County intermediate school district.

For all Schools of Choice enrollments, the District reserves the right to refuse to enroll any nonresident applicant if that applicant is or has been suspended from another district within the preceding two (2) years or if the applicant has ever been expelled from another district.

Students enrolled through Schools of Choice are eligible for continued enrollment in Royal Oak Schools through grade 12 as long as their enrollment in Royal Oak is continuous.

Frequently Asked Questions:

I live in the district and would like my child to attend a different elementary school. Do I fill out the schools of choice application?

No. Schools of Choice is for families who DO NOT live within Royal Oak Schools. You would need to fill out an elementary transfer request. Please see "Internal Elementary Transfers" for more information.

I do not live in Oakland County. Can I apply for Schools of Choice?

No. Royal Oak Schools is a section 105 school, which means we accept applications from families who live within the Oakland County Intermediate School district boundaries. You can view other districts that may accept out-of-county applications here.

We moved out of the district after the application deadline. Can I still apply?

No. We cannot accept applications by law once the application window has closed. You will need to enroll your student in their new resident district. If your child will be a senior, please get in touch with us.

I currently have a student enrolled in Royal Oak Schools under Schools of Choice. Do I need to fill out an application for their sibling, or can they automatically attend?

All students must have an approved Schools of Choice application to attend.

My student is going to be in 9th grade in the fall. Can they apply for Schools of Choice?

No. Royal Oak Schools accepts Schools of Choice applications for grades K-8.

My child's current school will not give me a copy of their discipline records without a formal request from Royal Oak Schools.

These records are part of your child's educational records, and parents are entitled to a copy. Royal Oak Schools requires a prior discipline record to process the Schools of Choice application.

My child will be in kindergarten and has no previous school records.

Discipline records are not required for incoming Kindergarten students.
