DK and Kindergarten Enrollment
DK/Kindergarten enrollment for the 27/28 school year will being in February of 2027. All children who are five years of age on or before September 1 are eligible to enroll for the upcoming school year.
If your child will be enrolling as a non-resident, you are welcome to attend any elementary school's Kindergarten Information Night. More information about School of Choice is available here. If you do not live in Royal Oak, you must apply and be accepted as a Schools of Choice student to attend Kindergarten.
Developmental Kindergarten
DK follows the same state laws and district timelines as traditional kindergarten programming. Developmental Kindergarten is the first of a two year kindergarten program. It is full day and follows the regular school calendar.
Placement into DK is very child specific. We typically see children with late summer or waiver birthdays in developmental kindergarten. If you are interested in DK for your child, please indicate that interest in your enrollment by selecting the drop down. Final placement will be determined after our Kindergarten Screening event that is held in the late Spring.
DK classrooms are capped at 18 students per the ROEA contract and there is currently one classroom at each elementary school. DK students are eligible for before and after care and will be promoted to Kindergarten after their completion of DK.
Things to Know
-
Michigan State Law stipulates that a child be five (5) years of age on or before September 1 in order to enroll in Kindergarten and Developmental Kindergarten.
-
If a child is not five years of age by September 1 but will be five years of age no later than December 1, you may still enroll your child in Kindergarten. We no longer need a paper waiver. Completing online enrollment will be your written notice that you intent to enroll your child.
