Frequently Asked Questions:
How does the Schools of Choice application process work?
During the application window, you will return to this webpage and complete the online Google form application that will be live March 10th at 9am-April 8th. Each child who is applying will need their own application. If your child is elementary school age, you will need to list your top three preferences for elementary schools. Final placement is space dependent.
Once the application window is closed, we will begin reviewing applications and verify eligibility.
If your child has an IEP, a copy of the most current IEP needs to be submitted to our enrollment department ([email protected] or fax: 248-280-2591) within three days of submitting the application.
Tentative acceptance letters will be sent at the end of April/Early May with next steps. You will then need to complete the pre-enrollment process outlined on our enrollment page and submit an "Affirmation of Prior Discipline." This form needs to be completed by your child's current school administrator (if they are grades 1 and above).
Is Schools of Choice first come first serve?
No. Should we receive more applications than allotted spaces, we will hold a lottery. In recent years, we have not had to hold a lottery and everyone who applied AND met the requirements was accepted!
I live in district and would like my child to attend a different elementary school. Do I fill out the schools of choice application?
No. Schools of Choice is for families who DO NOT live within Royal Oak School District. You would need to fill out an elementary transfer request. Please see the "Internal Elementary Transfers" tab for more information.
I do not live in Oakland County. Can I apply for Schools of Choice?
No. Royal Oak Schools is a section 105 school, which means we accept applications from families who live within the Oakland County intermediate school district boundaries. Please note there is a small pocket of Troy, near 15 and Dequindre that is zoned from Warren Consolidated and therefore not eligible to apply for Schools of Choice.
You can view other districts who may accept out of county applications here. You can view the Oakland County district boundaries here.
We moved out of district after the application deadline. Can I still apply?
No. By law, we cannot accept applications once the application window has closed. If your child will be a senior, please contact us.
I currently have a student enrolled in Royal Oak Schools under Schools of Choice. Do I need to fill out an application for their sibling or can they automatically attend?
Yes, all students must have an approved schools of choice application to attend.
My student is going to be in 9th grade in the fall. Can they apply for school of choice?
No. Royal Oak Schools accepts school of choice applications for grades K-8.
Will I need to reapply every year for Schools of Choice?
No. Once your child has been accepted and enrolled, they are able to attend Royal Oak Schools through graduation as long as their enrollment is continuous.
Is transportation provided?
No. Schools of Choice families must provide their student on-time transportation to and from school and ensure regular attendance.
My child's current school will not give me a copy of their discipline records without a formal request from Royal Oak Schools.
These records are part of your child's educational records and parents are entitled to a copy. Royal Oak Schools requires a prior discipline record to process the schools of choice application.
My child will be in kindergarten and has no previous school records.
