In honor of Native American Heritage Month in November, the Addams Elementary School PTA Cultural Arts Committee arranged an educational program to take place at the school. Co-chairs of the event were Jennifer Kowalkowski and Jen Stark, both parent volunteers. "We were hoping to bring an educational experience to the students of Addams that allowed them to engage in meaningful dialogue around Native American Heritage Month through a live pow pow," said Jennifer Kowalkowski.
The Ziibiwing Center of Mount Pleasant came to Addams and offered song and dance presentations to the students during two assemblies. The significance of each dance style and clothing worn was explained. Raymond Cadotte, a service representative at the Ziibiwing Center in Mt. Pleasant said, "We are very excited to come to Addams Elementary School to do a presentation for the students here to teach them a little bit about the history and culture of the original people of this land."
"I thought it was great," said Kolakowski. "The kids really enjoyed themselves. It was really exciting and they really enjoyed their beautiful regalia."
It was the school's first live assembly in two years. Principal Youanes said that he was excited about this opportunity for the students. "This event helped our Addams students have a better understanding of the Native American culture and heritage," he added.
"I think we all enjoyed learning about their heritage, and seeing all the different dance styles was just wonderful," said Jen Stark. "I thought it was educational for the students and I know they enjoyed it as they clapped along to the drums and the dancers."
